Hi,
I'd like to hide some categories from the menu bar. the items in these categories can only be purchased as an add-on and not on their own.

Look at the config setting frontend.navigationmenu.cssids. If you turn this on, and clear caches, it should insert unique IDs to the category menu elements which you can then use to hide or customize them with CSS.
