As of yesterday unique product identifiers are required in Google Base for all products, except those products in the apparel category and custom made goods, details can be found here : Unique Product Identifiers / Google Base. This is different from the manufacturers part number which I would imagine most people use for the SKU value in Kartris.

I think we are going to use the version description field in the db (currently unused) to populate with the versions EAN number. This can then be hidden on the frontend using display:none; and can be used when we create the feed.

Perhaps in the future an extra field (optional when adding a version) could be there so the EAN could be added? Maybe even have version attributes in the same way product attributes work so things like color, brand, size etc can be added at version level?
