We implemented this on our own for one of our customers, using jQuery jqzoom, and I'd be happy to show you what I did, which you can then build on if necessary to make it optional (on my site, all images need to zoom). THis is a great and pretty standard feature on most shopping carts, but a lot of styling has to be 'just so' in order for everything to come together.
