We are setting up new products and went to add the product to another category per 4.2.2.1. We found we could not. It takes me to a search screen where I'm supposed to be able to select a category but there is no select option on the page.
Additionally, you can only add new products to categories, shouldn't you also be able to search products to add?
Pretty disappointing. Version is 2.5004

You can only set a product's parent category while you're in the 'modify product' page in the backend. Please see attached screenshot for reference.
As mentioned in the User Guide, you need to enter the name or part of the name in the 'category parent' section textbox to get a list of matching categories. From there you can select more categories for the product. You can do this as many times as you like
From section 4.2.2.1 (Category Parent) ->
"To select a category, enter the name (or part of the name) in the single line text box of the 'category parent' section. A list of matching categories will spring up. Select the appropriate one and hit the 'Add' link next to the box. The category will be added in the box above."

Doesn't work. It does exactly what I described, When you follow your instructions to the letter and you see the list the list doesn't have Add buttons next to the items it has edit buttons. If you click that you end up in the edit screen for the category.
Any other ideas. Please understand, I have read the instructions on what the cart is supposed to do. Unfortunately it seems like the cart has not.

That means you're actually using the general backend search box and not the 'category parent' textbox in the modify product page. Please check the screenshot in my previous post. You should be typing the category name in the textbox above the 'Date Created' field and NOT in the 'Search' textbox on the right hand side.

No that is not what it means. As I told you before, I understand the process, I even quoted chapter and verse from the instruction manual! Please listen to what people are writing and you can resolve their issues much faster rather than assuming they are ID10Ts. I don't like to be talked down to any more than anyone else does.
I have figured it out. We are using IE10 and the auto complete box drop down doesn't show. It is the same in the latest version of Firefox. However, I can get it to work if I use IE9 standards mode instead of IE10. This might have been a good question to ask instead of assuming I was stupid.

I was just trying to help here. You'll get a listing of matching categories with edit buttons only if you search through the backend searchbox so I assumed that was happening on your side. Didn't assume anyone an ID10T. I just respond as if users are new to the software and they're still trying to find their way in.
Anyway, I don't seem to be getting the issue in my local copy here. The autocomplete dropdown works both in IE10 and Firefox 23.0.1. It even works using IE10 standards mode so its interesting to know whats causing the issue on your side. Can you let me know if you're using a modified backend skin? We're using the tag below in the default 'Admin' masterpage (Skins/Admin/Template.Master) to tell IE to render in IE9 mode.
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE9" />

I am on latest firefox and I get no problems with this part of the back end either.

Not meaning to shout but also didn't feel as though I was heard, I know you all donate your time and expertise here and I appreciate it. I'm glad we finally got around the questions about using the correct processes and reached the real issue.
Anyway pushing on...
No unusual skin or anything, We are using out of the box Kartris 2.5004 that has not been modified and is hosted remotely. The drop down for that autocomplete either isn't there or is manifesting off the screen.
I see the tag in the admin master page, I am going to review my other IE settings to see if I can find what is causing it. I'll post back my results.
Thanks Kartis Expert, I think that answer was very helpful, knowing the admin part of the site has browser requirements and is enforcing them with the meta tag provides direction.
