I have updated the favicon.ico file in the root of the site but the original icon persists - is this a compiled resource into one of the DLLs or do I need to update something else to get my ico file to display?

Yes, Neil is right. Browsers do cache the favicon.ico - certainly i get this in Firefox, which I tend to use.
If you type the URL to the favicon.ico, you might find it helps, e.g.:
http://www.kartris.com/favicon.ico
Then refresh and you should see the new icon, though whether the browser chooses to use this immediately seems down to chance.
But there is nothing compiled or cached within Kartris that is doing this... it's purely down to the browser.
