A simple question: if I set a product A related to a product B, shouldn't be automatically related B to A?

yes and no.

The issue you get is if item B is associated with lots of items.

Let me give you an example. If you go to the product page for product A you would see at the bottom a section called "Related Products" and in that area will be product B.

If you went to product B and looked in the Related Products section, there could be hundreds of products that product B is related to. Obviously you do not want to show hundreds of products so we limit the list, but which ones should we limit it to? It's easier to let the shop owner decide if they want product A to link to product B and for product B to link to product A.

You can get this result if Product B is an accessory. Let's imagine a set of curtains, the curtain is product A. the hooks for the tiebacks are product B.

The curtain (product A) will only have a few related products:
- tieback
- tieback hook
- matching cushion cover

However the tieback hook (product B) will have hundreds of related products:
- every curtain in the system
- every curtain tieback in the system

So from a practical point of view it does not make sense to make all related products 'backward viewing'.
