My reason for trialling Kartris at the moment is to look towards moving an online shop currently using Cactushop V5. It's database is currently running on MS SQL (don't know the version) but looking at the data tool it seems to indicate it's suitable for transferring database information from Cactushop V6. Will I be able to import data from V5 or am I going to have to do a 1000+ products manually?

I expect there will be various ways of pulling data from an SQL dump to a CSV file or something, but I'd be interested to find out if Cactushop V5 has a uses a schema compatible with Kartris.

I believe you will need to use the Cactushop datatool to move the V5 data to a V6 format then use the Kartris datatool to move the V6 data to Kartris format.

Yes, Neil is correct.

I've done this process for a client who was running Cactushop 4.2. I had to manually upgrade it to 4.5 and then use old data tool to move to v5 and then again to v6 and then lastly to Kartris. It required a bit of trial and error, but was much better than having to manually re-key data.

Contact us if you need old data tools.

Yes, also worth noting that although customers can be upgraded from CactuShop v5 to v6, the orders and order history cannot. This is because there were changes in v6 where more individual data of the order was stored.

Consequently, upgrading from v5-v6-kartris should carry over customers and product data but not order history (since there is no way to extract the detailed item-specific order data Kartris needs from the more primitive v5 data format).

I can live without order history more than I can live with thought of manually inputting products into a new site. We have over 1000 with a load of product versions (ouch!)

At the moment, our site is in control of a 3rd party company who existed before I came to work for my employer so it a case of asking them to use the data tool to provide us with a dump of the database info as v5? I can do the v5-6 conversion with the data tool myself. It's a real pain as neither myself or the boss has root access to the company's own site!

Do you have any method to connect to the live site database?

I used the data tool recently to backup a client's site to my local machine, as I had SQL server access details for it. From there I was able to run the upgrade process locally.

Else you can get a backup file from the host, restore that to your local machine, and then run the upgrade process on that. The data tool process (in case you've not done it before) is to setup a new clean install of the Cactushop database, and then use the data tool to transition data from your old Cactushop into the new database. Obviously in your case you'd need to repeat this process first to move to v6 and then to move to Kartris.

Unfortunately, we have no access to the SQL server our current database sits on.

Am I correct in assuming that the database holds URL information to product image folders as well? Just wondering what happens regarding thumbnail and large images used in Cactushop.

Price, details, weights etc I can see working out as common field information, but the product images? what happens to those?
