SQL connection problem after successful install

I'm trying the cart out on shared hosting which has a decent for tool for SQL admin. I ceated a blank database in preparation to the Kartris install procedure and when the web config procedure ran, I chose to connect to an existing database. There were no errors so I assume the connection was successful. Upon trying to access the home page I get the following connection error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Looking in the SQL admin it does appear that connection was successful during setup as there are lots of Kartris tables now populated in the schema.

I'm not an SQL admin so this sort of error leaves me out of my depth...

I have just worked through these issues when running kartris on a hosted site (1and1). The first issue is that the web.config file is not updated on the hosted site so you will need to edit manually. in the following section edit servername, databasename, username and password.

<connectionStrings><add name="KartrisSQLConnection" connectionString="Data Source=SERVERNAME;Initial Catalog=DATABASENAME;User ID=USERNAME;Password=PASSWORD" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings>

copy the saltstring kartris showed you on installation to PutSomeRandomTextHere

<add key="HashSalt" value="PutSomeRandomTextHere"/>

then uncomment the string below



kartris should then run with no errors

Ahaaaaa...the curse of 1&1 shared hosting strikes again. Then again, it was better-the-devil-you-know that made me choose them instead of fast2host.co.uk.

Well; many thanks for that solution, it certainly worked. Not the fastest of page generation on this shared hosting mularky though. Don't think the boss will stretch to a dedicated server though...

Shared hosting can be quite variable in speed/reliability, even different servers from the same host.

Sometimes sites will be slow when you first hit them, but speed up as they load into memory... on a site getting regular traffic it'll be kept alive through regular page calls, but can slow down if its not hit too often (as it has to load into memory when someone does hit it).
