Multiple Coupons At Checkout

It would be a great addition to see the functionality added to allow customers to use more than one coupon during checkout. We sell gift vouchers at various amounts, but we have had people buying say, 4 x £25 vouchers and the recipient of the vouchers trying to use them all in one purchase (launch irate customer phone call). The Amazon voucher system seems to be a good model to work from as it allows the purchaser to add as many vouchers as they want and it can also deduct and leave a balance.

With the way web users evolve and define the way they want to use the internet for purchasing, it is imperitive that we develop the UI experience to suit their needs.

Maybe a better way to do this would be to have a customer 'credit' balance. Vouchers could be redeemed against this, so you could top up your account with a voucher. What balance you have would automatically be offset against purchases you made. The system would retain your balance, so you wouldn't have to retain or keep vouchers. This would allow any number of vouchers to be used, as you'd just redeem them all against your account to top it up, then purchase, and any unused balance would be retained.

It's a fairly large mod though, would require new tables in the database to store balances and the usage of vouchers, as well as code at the checkout to use the balance within an order.

Would that level of mod require manually porting over to new releases?

Because this sort of functionality is common in other online shops, I was hoping it was something that would be considered as a benefit to most customers buying online and thus, be rolled out as part of a future release. Customers see it elsewhere and expect to have the same shopping experience across the board. Maybe Amazon had this implemented from day 1, which is the level of experience online shoppers expect these days.

I think the key issue here is, to be able to address the needs of customers in order to retain their custom. Make too many hurdles, and they just go somewhere else.
